December is a month when you think of someone other than yourself.  It is a time when we are focused on giving instead of getting.  Our Community Service committee has given us two great opportunities to do just that.

On November 15th, 4 CPCU members volunteered for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer, Auglaize, and Van Wert Counties (BBBS) fund raiser event, “Dancing with the Big Stars.”  The first time ever event recruited local ‘stars’ to perform on the dance floor to raise a goal of $10,000 for youth mentoring, but they surpassed that by another $10,000!  BBBS will be using the $20,000 raised to match the 35 children on their waiting list with a “Big” and to support all five of their youth mentoring programs. Our members, Becky Weiss, Jana Ringwald, Jason Brown & Dian Steele, assisted in manning the ticket booth, taking photos, and helping wherever needed.

In December, we sent 12 boxes of items to two separate units serving in the Army.  The committee found a website called Any Soldier (www.anysoldier.com) where anyone can send support to our military troops serving overseas.  All of the Soldiers involved in this effort are military volunteers stationed in areas overseas and there are 271 military contacts helping 12,916 service members.  4 boxes went to soldiers from Ohio stationed in Kuwait.  8 boxes went to soldiers from Kentucky stationed in Afghanistan.  We are monitoring the website hoping to get confirmation they received everything.

THANK YOU to everyone that was involved in giving items, packing boxes, listing all of the contents on the Post Office mailing labels signing the Christmas cards and taking the boxes to the Post Office.  One of our members has a daughter serving the military and she wrote“As the mom of a service member, I want to thank you all for your donations and participation in this project.  My daughter let us know many times how much packages from home mean. I'm sure that we will brighten the holidays for these groups.”

As you look through the photos, I would encourage you to remember to give more than you receive this Christmas!  Please note there will not be any CPCU monthly meeting in January!

Best Wishes for a Very Merry Christmas!

Respectfully,
